I know I go on about Scott Adams, but his conclusion is that carbon is a solved problem, as you say. With the
caveat that we're talking about Fourth Gen nuclear with the understanding that it is melt-down proof (it takes power to maintain the reaction cycle, anything bad happens it goes down) and that it eats radioactive [waste/materials].
