Scientific Visualization in Blender is old, the version 2.57b predates both the Cycles and EEVEE rendering engines, probably Open VDB integration and uses physics imported from Paraview. I think Blender has evolved to where the physics engine can handle Stokes-Navier equations on low end hardware.
The new rendering engines are fast and capably and OpenVDB allows fine-grained simulation economically.
