When I was a kit the peak was supposed to be in the 1990s and be in bad decline now.

The LTG forecasts in 1972 never said anything bad about the 90's. It always placed the timeframe of peak civilization at 2030 right in the original book. We shall see if we can delay the inevitable by another 20 years by printing (eventually worthless) money and unleashing super advanced oil and gas recovery techniques. And then collapse.
