I found that the exterior solar shade I use keeps more heat out of the car than anything else I've tried. It turns the heat away before it even hits the glass, so my dash is barely warm to the touch when I get in the car.
The pics are from my old Volt but I still use one on the new Volt, and I'm thinking of sewing a couple of them together to cover the rear glass, which is bigger than the windshield, since I get them for like five bucks each off Rock Auto and they last for years.
