I saw a video once of someone testing out a Metro with, I think, a 650 motorcycle engine and and transmission.
Of course, it also seems really weird just replacing that nice, almost new engine it's got in it now.

I'm pretty sure that geo metro transmissions will swap in? Where I am (North Dakota) I looked on car-part.com which searches salvage yards, and I can have my pick of transmissions from all the different trims of metro for anywhere from $85-200, depending on which model and how greedy the salvage yard is, all within 200 miles.
