I was led to believe that the reason for a separation edge is so that in gusting side-wind conditions the separation edge doesn't move fore and aft on opposite sides. That could produce a small wag-the-dog effect.

I doubt it was a puddle - would have left dirty water marks.
Yes, separation edges can also be used to held improve stability (page 178 of my book).
