I've always heard that he was a painter before he went into politics, and it sticks in my mind that he might have studied art somewhere in Austria.

ETA: Apparently he was rejected twice by the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, in 1907 and again in 1908, and had a career painting postcards.
