I heard a story when the USSR collapsed into chaos, some enterprising russians were able to wheel a Mig-29(?) out to the highway & roll it down the road, hoping some rich dude would pay them a few hundred (thousand?) dollars. Whether true or not, it is true that the U.S. bought 17 Mig-29s from what existed as russian gov't, so the planes weren't sold to Iran.
