Gizmodo has a pretty good write-up about this and where it started (on a joke Facebook page, apparently), and what might actually happen if people were to go through with it. I suspect most of the 1.5 million+ people who have responded to the event "going" and 1 million+ who have responded "interested" know it's a joke, but I also suspect there's at least a handful that don't and will actually try to walk up to Area 51 on September 20, who will be scooped up by the private contractors hired to patrol the base's perimeter and then sent on their way but will try to turn it into a media event or something about what the government's hiding or whatever. By September 23, everyone will have forgotten about the whole thing.
