I joked about that here regarding my Mustang several years ago. My fuel economy was worse on road trips than while commuting. I joked that someone must be adding fuel to my tank at night, but they weren't following along on my road trips. Someone even took my joke seriously.
We all know the reality that higher speeds on freeways require more fuel.
As I posted in post # 100 in this thread: The last time I drove my Mustang to southern California was in 2014. The relatively light traffic on July 4th Didn't hurt. I decided to try an experiment. I limited my speed to 65 MPH. I didn't have to stop for fuel in Barstow as I did in previous years. It took about 48 minutes more driving time to get to Foothill Ranch, but a fuel (and restroom) stop would have taken 20 minutes. I was less fatigued when I got there because I had the road to myself more of the time. I don't understand the "pack mentality" of most drivers.
Got my best tank ever on that leg of the trip. 34.339 MPG. Not
too bad for a 4 liter Mustang.
