I built a platform bed for $50 in lumber and $50 metal brackets. I felt quite proud of it, but replaced my full-size bed with a twin XL, used the metal frame, pulled off the casters, and set it on foot lengths of .75" pipe and flange ends. It wobbles a bit, so it would not be ideal for my brother, but I have my giant rolling duffel bags under my bed, which beats dust bunnies and real ones.
Mom is complaining that her pillow-top queen is too soft and hurts her back. She had me cut up a piece of plywood to put on top of her box spring.
However, queen beds are infinitely more popular than twin XLs, so I can buy and assemble this queen storage bed for her and hopefully organize some portion of her room:
