Yep, lots of variables outside of our control. We bring children into the world with tons of risks, and certain death. There's plenty of reason not to bother.
BTW- I just thought of the thing most annoying to my sensibilities about Alita; in the movie nobody had guns because it was illegal. Even the worst, most corrupt people in the movie didn't have a gun. It seemed to suggest that merely making something illegal would prevent its use. On the other hand, guns were legal on robots controlled by the government, and the government was purely evil and corrupt in this film, so perhaps the implication is that the result of an impotent citizenry is a thoroughly evil and corrupt government.
