When you said snails I was imagining it would refer about Schistosomiasi, but this disease it's related to poor sanitaion, so suage treatment or suage drains.

Malaria it's more often in Amazon forest.

Medical science don't like poor people. More people die from diseases linked to such things (poor sanitartion) and remote rural locations, than people who die from AIDS and cancer. But researchs for such diseases have very short money. That's why this is called neglected diseases. No one (or almost) cares about... Sad thing.
