If I were you, I'd ditch the external antenna altogether. My truck has had body panels swapped around on the front and somewhere along the line it ended up without a place to put an antenna on the front fender. I bought a universal antenna when I put my new head unit in, and it sits on my dash currently. I pick up every radio station that I can in any other rig or with either of my home stereos. I'll come up with a more permanent solution at some point, but for the time being, it works as well as having it outside.
