Anything but a box van will have some taper after the rear axle. Any transition should be smooth on it's face. The minimal case is the separation edge you see on newer cars.
There's driver sight-lines, but also keeping the tail light visible. Not to mention parking problems etc. that come with added length.
A full boat tail could be a pain in the aft, so you see truncations and boxed cavities.
