I read the fine article:

Price as tested: $320,000.
..and they don't burn clear premium in it? Mercedes were silver too because it's Germany's official racing color.

Neither of the articles connects the humpback body with lift-off top. Having watched from afar, (Parts Obsolete*) and their outlaw 356s, I've never seen that before.

You can get a 23-window bus body in steel for $17K. Imagine the same in aluminum with the Tesla small-block rear-wheel drive.

I notice the Range Rover isn't on that list, nor the Nissan Murano.

At the time it was introduced the Thunder Ranch RSK was considered at least equivalent to the original. The frame was by Chuck Beck and it was powdercoated and bonded to the fiberglass tub. I think it had good torsional rigidity.

* When they were in Amity, at their swap meet, I stood next to one of those $150,000 4-cam engines (and didn't take a picture ) and the unrestored but showroom fresh right-hand-drive 1954 barn door bus. It is worth about the same.
