Actually it's not - depending on what part of the state you measure from, of course. Houston-Phoenix is about 1160 miles, Houston-Chicago only about 1090 - and the southern part of Illinois, where the hysteria started, is several hundred miles closer.

You also have to consider that Arizona is probably getting most of its gas out of California refineries...
