Well aerosol filtration is poor, but droplets can get caught in the media easily, so it does something. The less viruses you breathe in, the lower chance some of them are viable or something like that.

An idea I saw 2 weeks ago was soaking filters in salt water to increase its efficacy, since the salt would help catch some viral particles (I know salt accelerates lipid oxidation and coronaviruses are lipid coated, but I have no idea if this happens fast enough to have an effect).
