When my system (Thinkpad T61 notebook) only uses about 14 wattts total (when I'm just doing e.g. coding or writing, which is most of the time), then 1 watt is a pretty significant percentage :-)
But there's a better reason for using white text on a black background as default: it's a lot easier on the eyes.
