I noticed the same thing on my Toyota Tacoma..
At a half a tank, my trip meter is at 200 miles which would make me believe I could pull 400 miles to the tank.. I'm hardly getting past 300 when the gas light goes on..

I wonder if when its time for a fuel pump replacment theres a way to adjust it so its more realistic..

Mite be a ploy for when you test drive a vehicle and the test drivers go,
"Wow, the gas guage hasn't moved a bit"
