Yes, this is a temporary step and would definately affect the structure if not replaced. In order to angle in the sides I have to sever all the connections, pie cut out the new angle, and then weld it all back. Based on the initial connections, putting it back as strong or stronger won't be a problem.

Cleaning grounds is a vastly overlooked troubleshooting step.
