Got the trunk open on the Fiat. Then I pulled the cylinder and worked it back and forth to loosen it up. Put it back together, closed the trunk and couldn't get it open again. Had to pull the back seat and undo the latch to get it open. Then tried again while paying more attention to alignment and got it. Now it opens as soon as you turn the key. The trunk is pretty impressive for such a small car.
