Cruise control mainly hurts fuel economy when it applies the brakes, or, in an automatic, when it causes an unnecessary downshift.
I actually found that using cruise control on the G2 Prius actually helped me maximize fuel economy, except for steeper downhills where I would let the car coast in D with a bit of regen.
