If you have wondered for a year and really want to know, you might ask.
My old job once hired an independent consultant at 4x my pay, and all the guy did was ask me how things work and initiate paid service calls with vendors to get them to solve his problems. I briefly wondered why my company would hire a guy who not only knew way less than me, but was much slower to learn new things. It was quickly obvious to me though, he dressed well and was a salesman of himself. You'd think salesmen would not fall for the tactics of other salesmen, but just the opposite is true. Somehow they believe the nonsense they say (think Michael Scott) and believe what they hear from others.
This consultant once asked me who the customer advocate was for this client... WTH, just talk normal. Anyhow, it's using sophisticated sounding language to say simple things like "who's helping Peggy" that managers seem to like.
