My reason for not starting a fire that would burn for 12-24 hours 12 feet from the house and 6 feet from the deck is that I wouldn't be able to maintain the Bart Simpson standard of firetending:

"I started a fire this morning that I really should keep an eye on."

It will take me a long time to build the ramp. If I light the stump on fire first then I will be able to keep an eye on the fire while I work, but how long will it be before I have a burning stump in the way or at least too close to my wooden ramp?
