'Integer' isn't limited to a specific size as a principle. It could be any size. Google 'long long integer' for instance.
In modern languages 8 byte integers are the norm, as processors now typically have 64 bit arithmetic processing capability and predictive pre-caching of data so there's no gain in using smaller integer sizes. This allows for calculus on 19 digit discrete numbers.
Suffice to say that integer size should not impact vote count reliability.
