The Japanese market smarts did have a special 660 cc Kei engine and it mounted to the regular 6 speed smart auto. Looking at the engine transmission package for the smart you see a wonderously compact packaging job. I doubt you could fit any other type of tranny in there without moving the engine or changing the wheelbase.

The most effective mod you could make to a smart is to remove the 200+ lbs it gained for US certification.
