My first hatchback was a 1993 Mazda 323 for $250. It had a headgasket problem and leaky radiator. So I took the head off and had it shaved and put in a new radiator and head gasket kit. The car ran fine, got mpg in the 40's (with my hypermilling driving) and I even drove it down to Puerto Vallarta Mexico and back.
My second hatchback was a 1985 VW Golf Diesel non-turbo. This car could get mpg in the 50's. It cost me $600 and mostly I had to change a few shifter linkage parts and had problems with door handles and CV joints. I drove this car to my mother-in-law's some 14 times, and only once it broke down (CV joint died). She lives 600 miles away.
Now I have a 2006 Toyota Prius, which I haven't driven hardly at all because there are a lot of things I still need to fix and hope I can fix before the HV battery goes out again.
