Basalt-infused PLA is proposed as a building material for Mars colonies.
PLA is an interesting material indeed, but it has limited applications due to a few downsides:
It is brittle, it has a very low melting point and it's hygroscopic.
But as an upside:
It's foodsave and to some degree even digestable.
There certainly are quite a few applications for it and I've used it before in 3d printing.
However it's weaker than even ABS, not to mention Nylon.
Might work for plastic food packaging, but you won't be able to drink tea/coffee from a PLA mug.
