Basicly using one or more powertool batteries to keep the cars battery charged and the inefficient alternator from doing anything.

I've got 12 Ah worth of 18V LiIon batteries, that should keep the battery charged up for quite a while.
You'd have the losses from the DC-DC but it would eliminate the loss from the alternator if you could find a way to turn it off. Sounds a lot more complicated than just building a higher capacity 12V battery.
