You might want to try good 'ol CAD - Cardboard Aided Design, full scale. With a day's work on some intercepted cardboard boxes using mostly layout tools, a knife, and hot glue, you can do a pretty good mock-up cap. This can be tested and altered about quite readily, and also tell you what structure you will and won't need in the finished product.
