'looking' would be futile, as it's invisible.
they have located it, although they still can't 'see' it.
all they can do is observe the effect it has.

we can't see radioactivity but it's there.
we can't see infrared radiation but it's there.
we can't hear infrasound but it's there.
we can't hear ultrasonic but it's there.
we can't see an alcohol fire during daylight but it's there.

gamma rays
X-rays
we DO have sensors though. Just not for dark matter.

Physicists want a unified field theory which can explain all phenomena, from the macro to quantum scale. We're a curious lot, and I suppose they'll just keep trying.
Dark matter and dark energy are part of that calculus.
