The way I ran my garage branch circuits I ran 12/3 with ground romex to a 2 pole breaker then put the the white wire on the neutral bus in the sub panel, then I was able to run both 240v and 120v receptacles on 2 breakers. Other wise I would have had to run 3 breakers and 2 runs of 12/2 wire.
