Wouldn't 12/3 be red black white and ground? Definitely after 2000. Btw on a homelite box, there are 1/2 high dual breakers available that take up only one space but provide 240
Unfortunately, I tend to have to defer to oilpan4 for this stuff. I'm a signal wiring tech
