The Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge University and others speak of values derived from statistical tools like, Legendre polynomial decomposition, statistical mean, splitting coefficients, surface distributions, significant centroid frequency shifts, photometric data, Helioseismic data, geometrical distortion, numerical models, maximum-entropy spectral analysis, correlation coefficients, Fourier power spectra, de-trending, etc..
There's a lot of statistical smoothing going on just to be able to discern actual changes and tends from the raw scatter-plots.
