My friend kept the interior and body clean, and waxed the car on a regular basis. He never detailed the engine compartment or undercarriage. I left those as is, so that prospective buyers could look for engine leaks etc. Also, unless a person is very careful, spraying an engine with water can result in electrical issues, for example.
