If looking at an older diesel or an older gasoline car with the same types of exhaust problems the gasoline car can actually be worse.
At one point diesels actually used to be lauded for their lower NOx emissions and always have had lower CO and HC emissions. Particulates have been a problem, but aren't near as deadly as CO and are generally considered worse than HC or NOx.
It just turned out that in gasoline cars the NOx became easier to control in our modern age. But I'd rather be in an old diesel car with an exhaust leak than a gasoline car with an exhaust leak.
