These extreme vehicles seem to ignore the law of diminishing returns. There are 3 people in the world that care about the difference in cost of filling a 50 MPG vehicle, and a 60 MPG vehicle. The compromises required to barely save any fuel aren't worth it to most rational people.

It would need to be fun to drive, or have some other distinguishing feature that can't be met by any alternatives.
