I am totally unfamiliar with hip-joint replacements, yet a neighbor had it after falling in the bathroom. Not sure if that neighbor was the same age your father is now, but I'm sure he was well over 70 and still very active. I guess having to adjust to a much lower activity level was much more of a struggle to him.
