Sorry to bump this up from the relative stoneage, but it appears no one ever addressed this.

There is nothing wrong with your alternator kill switch. Car batteries are 12.8 volts when fully charged, not 12.0 volts.

But, as you've discovered, the majority of the loss in the charging system is from the belt drive.
