I understand in principle why differing diameter wheels would cause accelerated wear on a differential, but that's essentially what they are designed for. When going around a corner, to a differential it's as if there's unequal diameter wheels. I'm not recommending the practice, but I'm also not worried about running a donut for a month while funds accrue for a proper repair.
People often cite best practices, but those are only best practices when time and money allow. Things can always be done a little better, assuming sufficient funds and time are available. That's basically the entire premise behind all the "hacks" people refer to online. What's the least investment to return 85% of the results. That's considered the "hack", even though it's not representative of the true meaning of hacking.
