Agreed there is water at the poles, but Valles Marineris is 'low hanging fruit' compared.

The central spot where the thunderbolt touched down is relatively flat and that makes for a good landing site, but to the SoutWest there are steep canyons and [most likely] lava tubes to offer radiation protection.
