I believe it was Victor Papanek's Design for the Real World: Human Ecology and Social Change that had a chapter titled Why You Can't Make A Piano From B-52 Wing Struts. The product has to be designed for reuse. His example was a Heineken bottle that could be reused as a glass brick.
