When Rich's German Motorwerks was still extant, the mechanic's disliked working under the New Beetle dash compared to the Golf. Never knew the details, never cared -- the Golf has a lower Cd.
I think the only do-or-die maintenance on a Type 131 was valve adjustment and the points and plugs. The Pertronix Ignitor solved the latter. I tried hydraulic lifters on one build but they rattled while they were cold on startup.
