I pivoted back to manufacturing engineering from design engineering 6 years ago because even then design work was being outsourced overseas. My current employer and the past 2 had Indian tech centers they were paying to do design work. The ratio of US to Indian engineers has only continued to shift toward the Indian side. My current employer added a Mexican tech center a couple years ago.

At my wife's employer the entire design engineering department is outsourced. They hired her to have someone on-site to check on the work being done by the outsourced design house. She is the only engineer they have.

Work From Home won't be the blessing that most people think. Any job that can be done from home can be done from anywhere in the world.
