The folks I worked for at Oregon Dome thought that ventilating a dome increased the lift. I found it frustrating, and I agree with you.
For Bucky Fuller's indoor windmill, the openings are an oculus [downwind] and a continuous opening at the [upwind] base.That sets up a toroidal airflow inside that can be harvested.
