Now you're talkin'!
My brother lives in one in Nevada, and even here, in North Texas, when Yellowstone caldera goes, no one around here will be around to talk about it.
I don't think humans have been on Earth during one of these episodes.
They're certainly capable of altering the climate according to the paleorecord.
Explosive eruptions, reported since writing was invented, and investigated by volcanologists are reported not to have altered the weather for more than 4-years or so.
This is where the concept of 'nuclear winter' and 'global-cooling' originated.
Benjamin Franklin wrote about it, and is credited with the invention of the 'parasol-effect' we're experiencing right now, with coal-fired power-plant, sulfur-dioxide aerosols cooling the entire planet.
When 'Frankenstein' was written by Mary Shelley, she was vacationing during the 'year without a summer.' Mount Agung had erupted in what is now the Indonesian archipelago, and it cooled the whole planet for two years before all it's ash rained out.
