You dont necessarily want a heavy motor, you want a large diameter motor that may be also heavy. Generally on electric forklifts there are two motors: drive unit of about 11 to 13" external diameter and a pump motor for the hydraulics of about 9" diameter and has a female spline on the shaft. Pump motors are considered useless because of that shaft. Most forklifts run less than 96 volt battery packs so currents are relatively high and you have a back emf issue restricting spped in a car. Over-volting applied to the motor allows you advantages. Suggest researching DIYELECTRICCAR.COM

And while the battery is expensive, they are completely rebuildable so an alternative would be sell the forklift and use those funds for your car.
