Even though I remember some hotels and apartment complexes still resorting to wood for water heating, and I even stayed some days at a hotel in Pelotas which also resorted to wood for water heating, I would only use wood either as a backup or if I had any actual use for the ashes, such as correcting soil acidity in a garden. But in the house of my paternal grandparents, there was a fireplace which they enjoyed during winter.
