There’s a huge Wind farm near Palm Springs, CA where you can take a tour to see the wind turbines up close. They are enormous if you’ve never been up close to one. At the entrance they have an exhibit of wind turbine designs through the years and how the first few iterations just did not last. The designs that seemed to hold up were at least twice as beefy as the first designs and they all integrated a brake to avoid overspeeding. One of the failed designs had a phrase that stuck out to me that was something like “Proving once again that designing a wind turbine is no easy task”.
